Bio: Once upon a time there lived a cute little kitten, and although she was small and meek, this kitten had very sharp claws that she liked to show all the other animals. However, none of the other animals liked her claws - they hurt when she scratched them. Although she wished that they could understand that she was just playing and meant no real harm, she soon realized she would make more friends if she kept her claws to herself and never showed anyone. So, that's the way it was.
One day, the little kitten was taking a walk and soon found herself in the middle of a humid swamp. She was walking across a big, mossy log when she spotted a tiny turtle in the shallow water beneath her. "Hello," she said, smiling. She was always excited to meet new friends.
The turtle looked up at her and saw her sharp claws clinging to the log, and, with a look of plain fear, hid back inside his shell. Of course, being curious and not so easily averted, the little kitten jumped jump near the water's edge and gently pawed at his shell, but no matter how much she nudged, the little turtle just would not come out and play with her. Sad and frustrated, the kitten eventually gave up and walked away, out of the damp swamp.
She walked so long and so far that when she finally decided to rest, she found she was in a deep, dark forest that she had never seen before. Though the kitten was still sad that the turtle wouldn't play with her, now she was afraid, too. Shen never liked the dark, and the trees were so close together that she could barely see. Moreoever, there seemed to be a sad, lonely whisper running through the forest. She was lost and alone, and suddenly she began to cry.
"Why are you crying, little kitten?" asked a deep, sympathetic voice from somewhere around her. Although this mysterious voice made her uneasy, the little kitten was comforted that she was not totally alone. She stopped sniffling and answered, "I'm lost and onely; the turtle wouldn't play with me, and I'm afraid of these dark woods."
"Ah, yes. I know of the turtle and I know of these woods, and neither are good for little kittens," the voice answered thoughtfully.
"Really?"
"Yes. The turtle is very shy and easily scared away; I imagine he saw your sharp claws and hid in his shell. And these woods - even the eyes of a cat could not pierce the darkness here."
"Then, how do you see?"
"I have lived here all my life; I do not need to see to know where I am going." There was a short pause, and then the voice continued, "If you'll follow my voice, I will lead you to a sunny hill outside of this forest. Will you come?"
The little kittne agreed, seeing no other way out. The voice began to tell the kitten many things as she followed, twigs and branches snapping under her paws as she moved along slowly.
Soon, the voice started to sound farther and farther away, and the little kitten began to worry. "Wait! You're going too fast for me!" the little kitten cried. Slowly then the voice would return, but as it spoke again, the little kitten wondered if she detected a hint of impatience in its tone. But, she dismissed it as nothing began to follow once more.
Again, the voice began to sound very far away, and again the little kitten cried out for it to slow down. Again it would come back to her, and it would progressively sound more frustrated and impatient with the little kitten's lack of progess out of the forest. The kitten became afraid of the voice, and she eventually stopped asking for it to slow down for her.
The voice was so far away, adn all th little kitten could do was try to move a little bit faster though the deep, dark forest. Soon, she was at a full run trying to keep us with the angry voice that led her, torn between her fear of the mysterious voice and her fear of being left alone in the dark. She tripped over branches and cut her pawas on sharp rocks that lay menacingly beneath her, all to keep up with the sitant voice. The little kitten's fur was matted and wet, and the bottoms of her paws were red and sore. She wanted to stop, but she knew she couldn't because then she ould lose the voice with her only chance to escape the forest.
Suddenly, the darkness became less dark; the little kitten started to see vague shapes of trees. She started to run even faster toward the light, and she collasped with exhaustion and relief on the top of sunny, grassy hill. She was on the verge of near-sleep when the voice, now very near, grumbled arrogantly, "Well, aren't you going to THANK me?"
The little kitten opened her eyes and gasped in horror. Before her sat a huge grey wolf, looking angry and scornful. He had tuffs of fur missing all over, and he was missing one of my dull, yellow eyes. Brownish saliva hung in threads around his mouth, and across his face lay a long, deep scar. The little kitten screamed, and ran as fast as she could away from that awful monster.
She ran and ran, terrified that the ugly, angry wolf would follow her. She ran until she collasped with exhaustion. As she slept, the rain came and washed the blood and dirt from her fur, and the sun came out and warmed and dried her. When she awoke, the most peculiar of sights awaited her - a small, black raven sat quietly on the grass, watching her.
The little kitten was quite taken aback and sat up quickly. "What do you want?" demanded the little kitten, a little apprehensively. She wondered if this raven was anything like the wolf.
"I was just admiring your claws; I think they're beautiful," said the raven.
The kitten was speechless; no one had ever told her that they liked her claws, much less that they were beautiful. "Really?" she asked, softly.
"Oh, yes. I think they're wonderful... hasn't anyone ever told you that before?"
"Well, no. No one."
The raven sighed dispairingly, "Oh, the treasures that go unappreciated. Such a pity."
The little kitten smiled and began to forget about how afraid she had been of the ugly wolf. The raven began to talk to her, quietly soothing her back to her normal, curious, playful self. Soon, the little kitten was chasing the raven all over the field, batting and clawing at him. A trail of shiny black feathers followed the two on the ground, but the raven and the little kitten were having so much fun that they played with each other every day on the sun-drenched field.
One day, as the day was just beginning to fade, the raven flew so high that the kitten couldn't reach him with her paws, try as she might. "Raven!" she called after him, squinting her eyes into the sun, "Raven! I can't see you anymore!"
She called to him again, but still there was no reply. "Maybe he is happier up there. I hope so," she sighed, longingly. She had had so much fun with the raven that she missed him terribly. She looked down again, finally tearing her keen eyes away from the sun that swallowed the raven. In the grass there lay a shiny black feather, rustling in the wind. The little kitten batted it curiously, and it began to blow away in the early evening breeze. Not wanting to lose this little piece the raven, she began to chase after it. She ran after the feather, turning this way and that as it floated and swayed in the wind.
The feather settled momentarily on the ground, and the kitten wasted no time in pouncing on it with glee and earnest. She held it between her paws lovingly and began to lick it, liking the way that the feather felt against her rough tougne.
Little did she know, however, that another pair of eyes was watching her from the distance. Caught up as she was thinking of how the raven had so suddenly flown away, she didn't even notice the approach of the other creature.
"Well, hello there, little kitten. What have you found?" the creature asked her. The kitten looked over towards the voice, and noticed an animal that she had never seen before. It had almost no fur, except for some yellow fur on its head and on its middle. It had green eyes and pink lips, and it was smiling at her. She looked at him curiously, and then remembered, "Ah, yes. This animal is called a 'little boy.'" Now, she had always heard that little boys liked toads and snails and puppy dog tails, and not little kittens. But he seemed gentle, and she was lonely, so she looked up at him and meowed in response.
"Oh, little kitten, you're so cute," the little boy said, smiling. And he began to run his fingers through her fur, which she found felt very good, and she wondered to herself why no one else had ever tried it. After several more satisfied meows, she climbed into the little boy's lap to be closer to his fingers. He continued to pet her, around her ears and down her back and up her tail, until it was very late at night and the moon and stars had already risen.
The little kitten started to become fond of the little boy and soon was purring contentedly. Suddenly, the little boy said to her, "Little kitten, it's very late. I should be going to sleep."
The little kitten meowed in protest.
The little boy seemed to be anticipating this and smiled. "Would you like to come home with me, little kitten?"
Truly, the kitten could think of nothing that would please her more. She jumped into the little boy's arms, and he carried her back to where he lived.
The little boy set her down in front of his fireplace, still warm with the embers of the day. He gave her a saucer of cream and a bowl of tuna fish, and he laid down next to her. She cuddled closer to him, and was soon fast asleep, dreaming contentedly of all the good things that little kittens dream of.
